Caterpillar 324E: DPF off via OBD on the crawler excavator

The situation

The Caterpillar 324E is a crawler excavator that earns its money in continuous digging and loading, usually far from the next workshop. On this machine the DPF had become the limiting factor: regenerations interrupt the cycle, rising back-pressure takes power away from the hydraulics, and a filter that does not regenerate properly ends in a derate.

The dealer asked for the DPF handled in software, and for the job to be done via OBD so that the ECU stays in the machine.

What we did

The ECU was read via OBD and the file developed for this software version.

  • DPF: regeneration logic disabled, back-pressure model and the associated sensors neutralised, related DTCs and the derate strategy handled.
  • Engine calibration: left stock – no power stage was part of this job.

Checksum corrected and the file written via OBD – no bench work, the ECU stays in the machine.

The result

No regenerations, no DPF-related derate and no lost hydraulic power from back-pressure. For the contractor this means an excavator that works the full shift without stopping for the after-treatment. Caterpillar excavators of this generation can be handled via OBD; the file is developed from the original read of each machine – the software version decides what the file looks like.
