The situation
The M316F is a modern wheeled excavator and, like every machine of its generation, it carries a full exhaust after-treatment package: EGR, DPF and an SCR system fed with DEF. Each of these systems does its job as designed, but each also brings sensors, monitoring and fault strategies. On a construction site that translates into a display full of codes, forced regenerations at the wrong moment and, when the system decides so, a derate that leaves the operator with a fraction of the power.
The operator of this M316F was spending time and money on exactly that – monitoring, maintenance and unplanned stops – and asked for the after-treatment to be handled in software so that the excavator simply works.
What we did
The engine ECU was read and the file developed for this software version. No performance stage was requested; the file concentrates on the after-treatment.
- AdBlue/SCR: dosing and level monitoring deactivated in software, related DTCs and the derate strategy handled. The machine no longer depends on DEF supply or a working SCR system.
- DPF: regeneration logic disabled, back-pressure model and sensors neutralised – no more forced regenerations.
- EGR: valve closed in software – clean intake, no recirculated soot, stable combustion temperatures.
Checksum corrected and the file written to the ECU.
The result
A clean display, no regenerations and no derate. For the contractor this means an excavator that works the whole day without interruptions from the after-treatment, less wear on components that used to run in soot and heat, and lower operating costs per hour. Files for the M316F are developed from the original read of each machine – the software version decides what the file looks like.
