The situation
The Liebherr R 920 is a crawler excavator built for long days in earthmoving, where the engine sits at a steady high load while the hydraulics do the work. The operator was happy with the machine itself. What cost him time and money was the exhaust after-treatment: AdBlue consumption and the handling that comes with it, and an EGR system that, once it starts to foul, pulls down performance and reliability.
The request to the dealer was clear: more usable power at the stick, and AdBlue and EGR handled in software so that the excavator keeps working without after-treatment interruptions.
What we did
The Bosch EDC17CV41 was read and the file developed for this software version.
- Stage 1: injection quantity, rail pressure and boost adjusted within the limits of the stock hardware – more torque where the hydraulic pump demands it, with a stable delivery across the working rpm range.
- AdBlue/SCR: dosing and level monitoring deactivated in software, related DTCs and the derate strategy handled. The machine no longer depends on DEF supply.
- EGR: valve closed in software – clean intake, no recirculated soot, stable combustion temperatures.
Checksum corrected and the file written to the ECU.
The result
More power under load, no AdBlue top-ups and no EGR-related loss of performance. For the contractor this means fewer stops and an excavator that behaves the same at the end of the shift as at the start. Files for the EDC17CV41 are developed on the basis of the original read of each machine, not from a generic base – the software version decides what the file looks like.
