The situation
An articulated dump truck is judged on one number: how many loads it moves per shift. The B35D with the Mercedes OM 501LA has 295 kW for that, and on a loaded haul road up a gradient every one of them is used. The limiting factor on this truck was the AdBlue system – supply, sensors and the fault messages that come with them, each of which can pull the engine into derate exactly when the truck is loaded and climbing.
The contractor wanted more power for loaded climbs and an end to the AdBlue-related stops.
What we did
The TEMIC ECU was read and the file developed for this software version.
- Stage 1: injection quantity, rail pressure and boost adjusted within the limits of the stock hardware – more power and a fuller torque curve for loaded climbs, with torque, exhaust temperature and rail pressure monitored and capped rather than simply pushed. No mechanical changes to the engine.
- AdBlue/SCR: dosing and level monitoring deactivated in software, related DTCs and the derate strategy handled. The truck no longer depends on DEF supply or on SCR sensors that throw faults.
Checksum corrected and the file written to the ECU.
The result
More power on the haul road, no AdBlue warnings and no derate. With the additional torque the truck holds a higher gear on gradients, which means lower engine speed and less fuel per load at the same cycle time. For the contractor this means more loads per shift, lower maintenance effort on the after-treatment side and a truck that can be planned with. Files for the TEMIC platform are developed from the original read of each truck, not from a generic base – the software version decides what the file looks like.
