John Deere Phoenix L40: new engine ECU generation supported via OBD and bench

The situation

With its current engine generation John Deere moved to a new engine controller, the Phoenix L40. For dealers this was a practical problem: files and read procedures for the previous ECU generation did not apply, and for a while the newest tractors could not be served at all. Requests for the L40 came in from several markets, so the controller went through our test programme.

What we did

The work started with the access path. Three routes were verified on the L40: read via OBD with the DFOX tool, read and write via OBD with the Dimsport NewGenius, and bench – read and write directly on the ECU for cases where OBD access is blocked or the unit is on the bench anyway. On this basis the following solutions were developed for the Phoenix L40:

  • Eco / Stage 1: more torque under load with a calibration that stays inside the limits of the stock hardware.
  • Performance / Stage 2: the next step for operators who want the full reserve of the engine.
  • AdBlue/SCR: dosing and level monitoring deactivated in software, related DTCs and the derate strategy handled.
  • DTC: individual fault codes switched off in software where a sensor or component is no longer fitted or has been replaced.

Every file is developed for the exact software version of the controller, checksum corrected, and written back by the route the dealer used to read it.

The result

The Phoenix L40 is supported. Dealers can read a current John Deere tractor via OBD or on the bench, send the original file and receive a calibration developed for that software version. As with every new ECU generation, the first files were tested on real machines before release.
