The situation

The MacDon M155 is a self-propelled windrower, and in haying and cereal harvesting it has a short window to cut the crop at the right moment. Its 4.5 l Cummins with 155 hp is a compact engine for a machine that works at steady load for long days, and fuel per hectare adds up quickly over a season.

A dealer’s customer wanted the M155 to work more efficiently: more power available at the header and less fuel per hour.

What we did

The engine ECU of the M155 was read by the dealer and the Eco file developed for this software version.

  • Eco: injection timing, quantity and boost adjusted for more torque at working rpm and a more efficient calibration under part load.
  • Load behaviour: the engine holds its speed better when the header meets heavy crop, so the operator can keep the ground speed instead of backing off.
  • No hardware changes: the file is written to the ECU; the windrower is otherwise unchanged.

Checksum corrected, the file returned to the dealer and written to the machine.

The result

More power at the header and less fuel per hour. For the farm this means more hectares cut per day in the harvest window and lower cost per hectare over the season. Lower consumption also means lower CO2 emissions per hectare, a point that matters for operations that document their footprint. The job was installed by one of our dealers at a customer’s farm – a typical example of how the dealer model works: the dealer reads and writes, Byte Performance develops the file.
