The situation
The MAN TGS 440 is a heavy-duty truck used in distribution and construction haulage, and like every truck it is judged by cost per kilometre. The Bosch MD1CE100 is the engine controller on this generation of MAN engines, a tightly integrated unit – which is exactly why the calibration has to be developed for the specific software version rather than adapted from an older ECU.
The operator wanted lower fuel consumption without giving up the performance of the 440.
What we did
The MD1CE100 of the TGS 440 was read and the Eco file developed for this software version.
- Eco: injection timing, quantity and boost adjusted for a more efficient calibration under part load and at cruising speed, where a truck spends most of its hours.
- Performance maintained: torque at low and mid rpm kept, so the truck pulls away loaded and holds speed on gradients without the driver working the throttle harder.
- No hardware changes: the file is written to the ECU; the vehicle is otherwise unchanged.
Checksum corrected and the file written back to the truck.
The result
Lower fuel consumption, unchanged pulling power and a smoother response for the driver. For the operator this means lower cost per kilometre and lower CO2 per trip – the two figures that decide whether a fleet runs profitably. Eco files for the MD1CE100 are developed on the original read of each vehicle, for its exact software version, and written back the same way they were read.
