The situation
A Setra S 517 HD is a touring coach that covers long distances at a steady cruising speed, and for a bus operator fuel is one of the largest operating costs. The Mercedes-Benz engine in the S 517 HD is a proven unit; the question was whether its calibration could be made more efficient for the route profile the coach actually drives.
The dealer’s customer, a bus operator, asked for an Eco file: lower consumption, no loss of driveability, no mechanical changes to the vehicle.
What we did
The dealer read the engine ECU of the coach and sent the original file. The Eco calibration was developed for this software version.
- Eco: injection timing, quantity and boost adjusted for a more efficient calibration under part load and at cruising speed – the operating range where a coach spends most of its life.
- Driveability: torque at low and mid rpm maintained so the vehicle pulls cleanly on gradients and out of stops without the driver working the throttle harder.
- No hardware changes: the file is written to the ECU; nothing else on the vehicle is touched.
The dealer wrote the file to the ECU of the S 517 HD and returned the coach to service.
The result
Lower fuel consumption on the same routes, a smoother response under load and an engine that runs in a more efficient calibration for the whole duty cycle. For the operator this is a lower cost per kilometre and lower CO2 per trip without changing the vehicle or the timetable. Eco files for coaches and trucks are developed from the original read of the vehicle, for the exact software version of its ECU.
