Volvo FH510: around 120 hp more with Stage 1 and lower fuel consumption

MachineVolvo FH510 (long-haul truck)
SolutionStage 1, around +120 hp

The situation

The FH510 is one of the most common tractor units in European long haul, and the engine underneath has a reputation for reliability that transport companies rely on. Stock, it is calibrated conservatively: the same hardware is sold with several power ratings, and the 510 hp variant leaves reserve on the table.

The haulier running this FH510 wanted that reserve for fully loaded trailers on gradients, without giving up fuel economy on flat motorway stretches.

What we did

The engine ECU was read and the file developed for this software version.

  • Stage 1: injection quantity, rail pressure and boost adjusted within the limits of the stock hardware – around 120 hp more with a matching torque curve, with torque, exhaust temperature and rail pressure monitored and capped rather than simply pushed.
  • Efficiency: the additional torque at low rpm lets the truck hold a higher gear on gradients and under load. Fewer downshifts and lower engine speed at cruising mean less fuel on the same route.

Checksum corrected and the file written to the ECU, followed by a test drive with the loaded combination to confirm the delivery under real conditions.

The result

Around 120 hp more, noticeably stronger pull with a loaded trailer and lower fuel consumption at the same average speed. For the operator this means less time on gradients, fewer gear changes and a lower fuel bill per kilometre. Files for the FH510 are developed from the original read of each truck, not from a generic base – the software version decides what the file looks like.
