The situation
The New Holland 385C is a large crawler excavator built for heavy earthmoving, and the 213 kW Hino engine has the power for it. What held this machine back was the exhaust after-treatment. Under intensive site use the DPF loaded up and pulled output down, the EGR system added to the problem and the result was a steady stream of fault messages that interrupted the work. Each stop costs money on an excavator of this size, and the contractor had had enough of unplanned downtime.
The request was simple: make the fault messages go away and give the operator the full 213 kW whenever the stick is loaded.
What we did
The file was developed for this machine and software version with the focus on the two systems causing the faults.
- DPF: regeneration logic disabled, back-pressure model and related sensors neutralised in software. No more clogged-filter derate, no forced regenerations in the middle of a dig.
- EGR: valve closed in software – clean intake, no recirculated soot, stable combustion temperatures over long days at high load.
- DTCs: all fault codes related to the two systems handled so that the machine no longer reports after-treatment errors.
The excavator went straight back to the site after the file was written.
The result
No fault messages, no loss of output through a loaded filter and the full 213 kW available for the work. For the contractor this means fewer stops, lower maintenance cost on the after-treatment and an excavator that behaves the same at the end of the shift as at the start – whether it is heavy earthmoving or precise work in a tight trench.
